Miss Elizabeth Bennet is the second daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Bennet of Longbourn-house in Hertfordshire. Said estate has been entailed away from the female line, which means that - as the Bennets had no sons - upon Mr. Bennet's passing, the house and lands will fall to a Mr. Collins, currently the rector of Hunsford in Kent. (Mr. Collins is a distant cousin of Mr. Bennet's.)

She is a particular favorite of her father's, but her mother has a marked distaste for her, stating that she has neither her eldest sister Jane's good looks nor her youngest sister Lydia's sweet disposition. (The narrator would be inclined to say both of those attributes fall to Jane, and other, less pleasant ones suggest themselves for Lydia, but here is not the place for idle gossip.)

Her father's partiality to her is due to the fact that he considers her the cleverest; her playful disposition and dry wit suggest he may be right. Or perhaps she is simply less concerned with the frivolities that her younger sisters entertain, and not so good-humoured as Jane as to believe the best of everyone.

While Jane is of course the most beautiful creature in town, there are some who find themselves intrigued by Miss Eliza Bennet's fine eyes.
